Playground Games Confirms Playtime for Highly Anticipated Fable Reboot

As the release date for the much-anticipated Fable reboot draws closer, players finally have an idea of the scale they can expect from the return to the land of Albion. During a Q&A session at Gamescom 2026, the development team at Playground Games provided a breakdown of the title’s expected completion time.

According to associate game director Will Kennedy, the Fable main story will clock in at approximately 15 to 20 hours. However, those looking for a more substantial experience will find plenty to keep them occupied, as the studio confirmed that there is an additional 15 to 20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration content available outside of the core narrative.

More Than Just a Mainline Quest

When faced with suggestions from attendees that the game might be perceived as “not a huge game,” the developers were quick to pivot to the game’s deep systemic nature.

“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy explained. “And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.”

Craig Littler, also an associate game director at Playground, doubled down on this sentiment, noting that for players who enjoy engaging with the game’s broader mechanical simulation, “you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do.”

A Return to Form

The Fable reboot has generated significant buzz for its attempt to recapture the unique, irreverent, and quintessentially British charm of the original trilogy. Early previews have praised the game’s beautiful aesthetic and its commitment to being “silly, crass, and systemic.”

While the series has a historical reputation for “promising the Moon”—a nod to original creator Peter Molyneux’s ambitious, often over-the-top marketing—Playground Games appears to be striking a balance by grounding the game’s scope while promising deep, reactive NPC interactions and meaningful morality-driven gameplay.

The title is currently shaping up to be an ambitious project that understands the DNA of what made the original Fable games icons of the Xbox era.

Release Information

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see if Playground Games has successfully pulled off this daunting revival. Fable is scheduled to launch on February 27, 2027, and will be available across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X.
