From Hunger to History: The Inspiring Rise of India’s Commonwealth Judo Champion Harsh Singh

The path to sporting glory is often paved with sacrifice, but for 23-year-old Harsh Singh, the battle was fought in the shadows of extreme poverty long before he ever stepped onto a competition mat. Today, he stands tall not just as a champion, but as a beacon of resilience for aspiring athletes across India.

In a landmark achievement for Indian sports, Harsh recently claimed the gold medal in the men’s 60kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. With this victory, he etched his name in the record books as the first-ever Indian male judoka to secure a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, marking the culmination of a journey defined by grit and relentless ambition.

A Childhood Forged in Adversity

Growing up in Dwarka, Delhi, Harsh’s early life was marked by financial fragility. His father, a hardworking electrician, spent his days traveling from home to home repairing appliances. With a daily income often fluctuating between just Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, the family lived on the razor’s edge of survival.

For young Harsh, the choice to pursue judo brought with it the crushing weight of additional expenses—training fees, specialized gear, travel costs, and the rigorous nutritional requirements of a combat athlete. Despite the family’s inability to afford even basic luxuries, his father supported his dream, while Harsh fueled his training with a singular focus: to elevate his family out of poverty.

The Pandemic Breaking Point

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic nearly derailed everything. As India entered lockdown, his father’s electrical work vanished overnight. The household income hit zero, and the family’s modest savings were quickly exhausted. During this period, the situation became so dire that the family often struggled to secure daily meals, eventually forcing them to borrow money just to survive.

Yet, even in the depths of this crisis, Harsh refused to concede. He continued his training, treating every practice session as a stepping stone toward a better future for his parents.

A Turnaround Through Discipline

The year 2024 proved to be the turning point. Harsh’s dedication finally yielded tangible results when he clinched the gold at the National Championships. This victory acted as a catalyst for his career, leading him to a position with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). His journey continued to ascend as he joined the Indian Army as a Havaldar, a transition that provided him with the financial stability he had long craved.

The Indian Army became the backbone of his athletic success, providing him with professional training facilities, a structured diet, and the peace of mind required to focus entirely on his craft. The transition from an electrician’s son battling hunger to a soldier-athlete was complete.

A Historic Triumph in Glasgow

The world watched in awe at the 2026 Commonwealth Games as Harsh translated years of hardship into pure, focused energy. His historic performance in Glasgow silenced any doubts about his potential, cementing his legacy as a pioneer in Indian judo.

Reflecting on his path, it is clear that Harsh Singh’s gold medal is more than just a piece of metal; it is a testament to the fact that with enough perseverance, even the most humble beginnings can lead to historic judo gold. From worrying about his next meal to standing on the highest podium in the Commonwealth, Harsh has proven that the greatest victories are won by those who refuse to surrender to their circumstances.
