Despite initial aspirations of joining the National Defence Academy (NDA), Deondi’s career path ultimately diverged, leading him into the fascinating world of voices, stories, and character portrayal. His prolific career has seen him lend his vocal talents to a myriad of beloved characters, from the charismatic Gary in Zootopia 2 and the earnest Simon in Love, Simon, to the iconic Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things, among numerous others. Yet, the man behind these memorable voices often remains a mystery to the wider audience.
Beyond his accomplished work as a voice actor, Deondi is also a skilled practitioner of dialogue adaptation and writing, having transformed countless narratives throughout his professional life. Most recently, he undertook the monumental task of adapting Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, for Hindi-speaking audiences.
In a recent exclusive conversation, Deondi shared insights into his remarkable journey. Hailing from the picturesque region of Uttarakhand, his family relocated to Delhi following his father’s transfer within the CISF. It was in Delhi that Deondi pursued his higher education, graduating from Dyal Singh Evening College, Delhi University, where he actively participated in the dramatics society. His passion for performance further led him to secure a diploma in theatre from Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, where he honed his skills as an actor.
Given his background with a parent in the forces, a career in the armed forces initially seemed like a natural progression for Deondi. However, his experience during the entrance examination for the NDA quickly revealed that this path was not destined for him.
His professional odyssey truly began in 2007, when he moved to Mumbai. Recognizing the financial limitations of theatre at that time, he initially joined HDFC Bank. For six months, he worked in the banking sector, handling inbound calls – an experience that, unbeknownst to him then, served as his foundational voice training ground. This role provided him with invaluable lessons in vocal modulation and effective communication.
Despite receiving commendation for his performance in banking, his heart remained firmly rooted in the creative arts. This period marked the beginning of a significant struggle, though his perseverance gradually led to improvement. Even as lucrative offers from banks continued to materialize, Deondi remained steadfast in his pursuit of a creative role. His persistence paid off when he received an offer from a dubbing studio specializing in localization for prominent channels like Cartoon Network and Disney. He began as an intern director, swiftly earning a promotion and subsequently voicing minor, "incidental characters" within the studio.
The demands of dubbing required a meticulous blend of technical precision, requiring seamless lip-sync, accurate script interpretation, and emotionally resonant delivery. After two years, Deondi transitioned to a freelance career. His significant breakthrough arrived in 2011 when he voiced a character in Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin. This project, though challenging, proved immensely rewarding and effectively cemented his career in voice acting.
From that point forward, Deondi lent his distinctive voice to an impressive array of characters, including Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Max in Pokémon, among many others. However, some of his most challenging assignments included voicing the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the series Dahmer and adapting a series centered around his childhood hero, the legendary footballer Diego Maradona.
Reflecting on the experience of portraying Jeffrey Dahmer, Deondi acknowledged the profound impact such dark characters can have on an actor, lingering long after the performance concludes. When questioned about his method for disengaging from such intense roles, Deondi shared a profound realization: his failure to pass the NDA entrance test had, in fact, taught him that the ability to transition between personalities and roles comes naturally to him, a skill that now serves him invaluable in his multifaceted career.
