Scarlet, the fantasy action anime film from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, is now available digitally in India. Viewers can rent the film on Amazon Prime Video, where it is also offered in Hindi and Tamil dubs.
The film first released in Japanese cinemas in November 2025 before arriving in Indian theatres on February 6, 2026. It has now made the jump to home viewing for audiences who missed its theatrical run.
Loosely inspired by Hamlet, Scarlet follows a young princess whose father is murdered. Driven by revenge, she begins a journey across different eras in search of the truth, only to become trapped in a wider cycle of violence.
Sony describes the story of Scarlet as:
“From visionary Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (MIRAI) comes a powerful, time-bending animated adventure about SCARLET, a medieval-era, sword-fighting princess on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. After failing at her mission and finding herself gravely injured in an “Otherworld,” she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day who not only helps her to heal but shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage. When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?”
Scarlet is also a notable shift in his career. While Hosoda built his name through hand-drawn animation, this film is a fully CG feature, making it one of his biggest stylistic changes yet.
Before launching Studio Chizu, Hosoda worked earlier in his career at Toei Animation on titles including Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon, and later spent time at Studio Ghibli.
