GATE 2027 Registration Begins: IIT Madras Introduces Robotics Paper and Makes DigiLocker Mandatory

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has officially commenced the registration process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Aspirants can now submit their applications through the official portal, marking the beginning of the journey for thousands of students aiming for premier postgraduate education and public sector recruitment.

After a brief deferment from the original August 14 start date, the application window is now live. Candidates have until September 27 to complete their registration without incurring a late fee.

Mandatory Integration with DigiLocker

A significant highlight of this year’s examination cycle is the mandatory implementation of DigiLocker. To streamline the verification process, IIT Madras has integrated the GATE 2027 registration process with DigiLocker accounts.

Once a candidate links their account, essential details—including name, date of birth, mobile number, email address, profile photograph, and identity card number—will be auto-populated. IIT Madras officials have strongly advised applicants to ensure their DigiLocker credentials are active and that all personal information is up-to-date and accurate to avoid technical hurdles during submission.

Expansion of Academic Horizons

Keeping pace with evolving technological demands, IIT Madras has introduced a brand new test paper: Robotics and Automation (RA). This addition reflects the growing importance of autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing in the global engineering landscape. With this new paper, the total number of subjects offered in the exam has reached 30.

Examination Schedule and Key Dates

The GATE 2027 exam is scheduled to be held over three weekends in February 2027. The testing dates are set for February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21.

  • Extended Registration Period: Rs 2,500 for unreserved candidates; Rs 1,500 for female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
