Good Morning Britain star shares ‘breaking news’ as ITV show’s future confirmed


The presenters of Good Morning Britain opened up about the show’s future on Monday

The hosts of Good Morning Britain shared “breaking news” during the latest broadcast.

Susanna Reid and Ed Balls were back hosting the breakfast show on Monday (July 6), bringing viewers the day’s top stories from Britain and beyond.

The pair celebrated England’s World Cup victory over Mexico, while also addressing Prince Harry’s forthcoming return to Britain.

That’s not all, as Sean Fletcher shared some “breaking news” about ITV. He stated: “We’ve got some breaking news to bring you. ITV has announced that it’s agreed to sell its TV and streaming services to Sky for £1.6 billion.

“The deal will create the largest commercial broadcaster [that’s] set to rival streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix. We’ll have more details later on in the show,” reports the Mirror.

During a subsequent conversation with Richard Arnold, Susanna confirmed GMB’s future following ITV’s restructuring.

“We have this breaking news this morning. Sky reaching a £1.6 billion deal to buy ITV’s television and streaming services,” she confirmed.

Entertainment correspondent Richard remarked: “All the t’s need to be crossed and the i’s need to be dotted. But the important thing for you guys watching at home is it’s business as normal. All your favourites – Corrie, Emmerdale, the faces you wake up to every morning on Good Morning Britain – nothing’s going to change.”

Susanna then confirmed: “We’re going nowhere,” before Richard said: “More importantly for you guys at home, as well, it’s free to air on ITV and ITVX moving forward. So, nothing will change.

“It will create the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, and Sean will have more on that at 8 o’clock.”

The acquisition represents one of the most significant takeovers in British media history, with American-owned Comcast – which owns Sky – having initiated discussions in November last year.

Sky chief executive Dana Strong described it as “a defining moment for British media”.

“The UK media market is undergoing a profound and rapid transformation, and as competition for audiences intensifies, scale matters more than ever in order to compete with global streaming giants and YouTube in the UK,” Sky Group said in a statement.

“Viewers will continue to enjoy the shows they know and love, such as Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Love Island, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! , This Morning, Loose Women, Lorraine and News at Ten – alongside major live sporting events.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am
