Shubman Gill reflects on lessons learned as Sri Lanka holds India to a hard-fought draw
India captain Shubman Gill has expressed a mix of disappointment and optimism following the conclusion of the Test series against Sri Lanka. While India secured a 1-0 series victory, the visitors were denied a clean sweep in the second Test in Colombo after a resilient lower-order performance from the hosts forced a draw.
Despite the result, which impacted India’s standing in the World Test Championship, Gill remains focused on the long-term growth of his squad as they prepare for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, set to commence on November 19.
A Lesson in Resilience
The second Test appeared to be heading for an Indian victory after a dominant first two days, but a gritty display by Sri Lanka’s batsmen—anchored by Sonal Dinusha’s magnificent unbeaten 133—flipped the script.
“A lot of learnings in this series. I think we played decently well. Obviously, it’s not the result that we wanted,” Gill admitted in a post-match interview with the BCCI. “Sometimes you have got to learn from the opposition as well and give credit to them for the way they played over these three days.”
Padikkal Emerges as a Key Asset
One of the brightest chapters of the series was the resurgence of Devdutt Padikkal. Stepping in due to the injury-forced absence of Sai Sudharsan, Padikkal delivered a masterclass in application. Ending the series as the top run-scorer with 328 runs at an average of 109.33, including two centuries, he has firmly staked his claim for the No. 3 spot in the Test lineup.
Gill was full of praise for the youngster’s temperament. “We speak about how a batsman should make the most of it once set, and Devdutt showed that. The way he batted was a treat to watch; it truly reflects the mindset of a high-quality player.”
Suthar Tipped for Future Greatness
While the batsmen dominated the headlines, left-arm spinner Manav Suthar established himself as a formidable weapon for India. After claiming a career-best 10-wicket haul in the first Test, Suthar concluded the series with 16 wickets at an average of 21.06.
Gill sees a future leader in the young spinner. “He has been magnificent. I think he is going to be someone who leads the spin attack for India for a very long time,” Gill noted. “Every time he comes on to bowl, it feels like he is going to create chances and get us wickets.”
The Road Ahead
The second Test was defined by Dinusha’s heroic resistance, as he combined with Keshara Nuwantha to produce a 112-run partnership that stalled the Indian bowlers. While the draw was a setback in the context of the World Test Championship points, the series provided valuable insights into the depth of the current squad.
As the team turns its attention to the New Zealand series, the captain is confident that the lessons absorbed in Sri Lanka—both from their own tactical execution and the stubbornness of their opponents—will stand them in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead in the coming months.
