Polyphony Digital Announces Massive “Spec IV” Update for Gran Turismo 7
The world of Gran Turismo 7 is set for its most significant expansion to date. During today’s PlayStation State of Play, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi officially unveiled the Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV update. Designed to serve as the inaugural celebration for the franchise’s upcoming 30th anniversary in 2027, this massive content drop will be rolled out to players in two distinct phases this October and December.
Following in the footsteps of the successful Spec II and Spec III updates, Spec IV looks to address community feedback gathered from recent player surveys. The update is packed with highly requested features, new circuits, and significant quality-of-life improvements.
New Circuits and Fan-Favorite Returns
The update introduces two major track additions. Perhaps most exciting for long-term veterans is the return of the Autumn Ring, a classic circuit that hasn’t appeared in the series since Gran Turismo 6. Polyphony Digital has confirmed that the original layout will be faithfully recreated, alongside a new, extended configuration that offers modern racing challenges.
Joining the roster in October is the Sportsland Sugo Circuit. A staple of the Japanese domestic racing scene—hosting major events like Super GT and Super Formula—this 3.7km track features intense elevation changes and a challenging final sector that demands precision.
Gameplay and Online Innovations
Spec IV is set to revitalize the online experience with two major additions:
- Shuffle Racing: A cult-favorite mode last seen in Gran Turismo 5, Shuffle Racing returns, forcing players into randomized cars of similar performance levels to ensure a level playing field and unpredictable, exciting races.
- Online Drift Challenge: To cater to the drifting community, Polyphony is introducing dedicated online leaderboards and events to test control and style.
Furthermore, a new “Family Mode” will arrive in December. While details remain sparse, it is positioned as an accessible entry point for casual players and families, potentially integrating the spirit of the My First Gran Turismo concept directly into the main game.
Expansion of the Car Collection
Polyphony has confirmed 12 new vehicles for the update. The first six revealed include:
- BMW M5 (E60): The legendary V10-powered sports sedan.
- Honda Mugen Motul Civic: A fan-favorite Group A touring car.
- Citroën 2CV Charleston: A classic French icon.
- Honda Stepwagon Spada: Continuing the tradition of including quirky, everyday Japanese machinery.
- Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Evo: A high-performance evolution of the beloved concept.
- Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo: The Chinese tech giant’s futuristic VGT entry.
A New Era of “Concierge” Services
The update also touches on the game’s economy and collection management. Players can look forward to a new “Car Concierge” service, which is expected to simplify the process of acquiring rare vehicles, moving away from the restrictive nature of the current rotating Used Car and Legend Car dealerships. Additionally, updates to the Car Viewer, new “Driving Experiences,” and deeper progression elements are slated for release.
With the first phase of the update arriving in October, fans won’t have to wait long for more specifics. Polyphony Digital has promised further deep dives during Round 3 of the Gran Turismo World Series in Singapore on October 3.
