GTA 6 Gameplay Leaks Surface Amidst "Digital-Only" Protest, Weeks Before Official Netflix Reveal
London, UK – Weeks before its highly anticipated "Extended Look" reveal on Netflix, alleged gameplay footage of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) has begun circulating online. The leaks, attributed to a group named Cyberleek, claim to be a protest against publisher Take-Two Interactive’s decision to offer only digital pre-orders for the game, eschewing a physical disc version.
The circulating videos, while not directly shareable by VGC, have become widespread across social media platforms, offering tantalizing glimpses into the upcoming title. One clip reportedly showcases Jason, one of GTA 6’s two protagonists, engaging in a basketball mini-game at a familiar house from the game’s reveal trailer. Intriguingly, this footage suggests the inclusion of RPG-style mechanics, with Jason’s "focus" stat increasing upon successfully landing a shot.
A second video, if authentic, features a dynamic driving sequence where Jason crashes into a delivery vehicle before initiating a fistfight. This particular clip appears to confirm a detail that has been a subject of speculation: that vehicles in GTA 6 will require gas to operate.
Cyberleek, the group taking responsibility for these leaks, explicitly stated their motive. They are targeting Take-Two Interactive in protest of the company’s commitment to a digital-only release for GTA 6, eliminating physical disc options. The group further amplified their protest by also publishing what they claim to be the game’s expansive map.
At the time of this report, there are indications that some of the alleged GTA 6 videos are being removed from platforms due to copyright strikes. Rockstar Games has been contacted for comment regarding these unauthorized disclosures.
Should these leaks prove authentic, this incident marks at least the third time GTA 6 content has prematurely surfaced online ahead of official announcements. In September 2022, the gaming industry witnessed one of its most significant data breaches, which saw over an hour of GTA 6 development footage widely distributed. This was followed by the game’s debut trailer leaking online in December 2023, hours before its planned official release.
Despite these ongoing leaks, the official "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" is still scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 27, at 12 pm PT / 3 pm ET / 8 pm BST. It will subsequently be available on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 website six hours later.
Neither Rockstar nor Netflix has provided additional details regarding the length or specific content of this upcoming presentation. However, Netflix’s official description promises an "extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, the next evolution in the groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto series."
Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of nonfiction series, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming – a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience."
The repeated leaks highlight the immense fan anticipation for GTA 6, while also underscoring the challenges developers face in managing information in the digital age, especially when faced with organized protests against publishing decisions.
