Philips Hue Moves Into High-End Interior Design with Architectural Smart Lighting
For years, the smart lighting market has been dominated by products that often feel more at home in a teenager’s dorm room than a sophisticated living space. While color-changing bulbs and strips are functional, their “gamer-centric” aesthetic has frequently left interior design enthusiasts wanting more. Philips Hue is now looking to change that narrative with a new, design-forward collection unveiled at this year’s IFA trade show in Berlin.
Moving beyond basic bulbs, the company is pivoting toward architectural integration, launching a series of fixtures that prioritize both form and light quality. The centerpiece of this new strategy is the Liane 360-degree Rope Lights, a flexible lighting solution that aims to elevate the concept of “smart” home décor.
A New Standard for Diffuse Illumination
The Liane rope light utilizes proprietary OmniGlow technology, which creates a 360-degree tube of fully diffuse light. Unlike traditional LED strips that often reveal harsh, individual pinpricks of light, the Liane provides a soft, uniform glow that can serve as a focal point in any room.
Because it is highly flexible, the Liane can be mounted to walls or ceilings using specialized clear clips, allowing users to craft custom organic shapes or accentuate existing architectural features. While flexible rope lighting is a staple of high-end interior design, it has historically been limited to static white light. Philips Hue’s innovation is bringing its robust, color-changing smart ecosystem into this professional-grade form factor.
However, this elevated aesthetic comes with a premium price tag. The Liane 360-degree Rope Lights start at $399.99 for a 3-meter length, with a 5-meter version retailing for $549.99.
Expanding the Design-Forward Portfolio
Alongside the Liane, Philips Hue is expanding its popular Signe line, which is specifically designed to function as an intentional design element rather than a hidden light source. The new additions include:
- Signe Pendant: A sleek, minimalist overhead fixture.
- Signe Pendulum: A modern take on hanging lighting.
- Signe Pole: Designed to be propped strategically against walls to create dramatic lighting gradients.
These new fixtures feature a slim, sophisticated black housing and are scheduled to hit the market in October, with prices starting at $319.99.
Festive Additions
The company also took the opportunity to update its seasonal Festavia collection. The popular line—which offers smart control over string lights—is expanding to include curtains, nets, and icicle lights, allowing users to apply Hue’s signature color-changing capabilities to their indoor and outdoor holiday decorating.
With this new collection, Philips Hue is signaling a shift toward a more mature market. By blending architectural design with advanced smart technology, the company is finally bridging the gap between high-end interior aesthetics and the convenience of the connected home.
