In a candid revelation, star Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about the emotional and professional turmoil he faced after being unexpectedly dropped from the Indian T20I setup—a decision that came just months after he steered the team to a historic T20 World Cup victory.
Despite an unblemished record as captain, having led India to triumphs in both the T20 World Cup and the Asia Cup without losing a single series, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee opted to move in a different direction. Consequently, Shreyas Iyer was named as the new T20I captain for the upcoming series against Ireland and England, bringing an abrupt end to Suryakumar’s tenure.

“Obviously, the situation that has come now, even I had not thought that this would happen,” the 35-year-old said. “I felt that, going forward, I would be taking this team forward for another two years. Suryakumar, often referred to as ‘SKY’ by fans, admitted that the isolation of being at home allowed the frustration to fester. “I was thinking, ‘how can this happen?’ We just won the World Cup,” he confessed. He noted that while his form in 2025 had been a point of concern—having failed to register a single half-century for India during that calendar year—the move still felt premature given the team’s winning momentum.

Despite the disappointment, Suryakumar has maintained a composed exterior. He revealed that he reacted to the news with a smile, a coping mechanism he has long used when facing high-pressure situations or setbacks. He also held no animosity toward his successor, Shreyas Iyer.
“I have seen the team they have chosen. I have played a lot of cricket with Shreyas. I know he is a good player, a good human being, and a good captain also. So, I wasn’t asking ‘why him?'” he explained.

“I didn’t react,” Suryakumar stated. “Because it’s not my fault. That’s not how SKY has ever been. Whatever call someone took, they must have thought it was better for the team. There is no problem.”
