Smriti Mandhana Rewrites History: Indian Star Smashes Records in Dominant Asia Cup Win
Indian cricket sensation Smriti Mandhana produced a masterclass in batting on Thursday, leading India to a resounding 137-run victory over Hong Kong and securing a spot in the Women’s Asia Cup semi-finals.
In a display of pure dominance, the elegant left-hander hammered 124 off just 64 deliveries. Her spectacular knock propelled India to a formidable total of 193 for five. In response, the Hong Kong batting lineup crumbled under pressure, skittled out for a mere 56 runs in 16.2 overs.
A Historic Milestone
Mandhana’s innings was not just a spectacle; it was a record-shattering performance. The century marked her second in T20 Internationals, making her the first Indian woman to achieve the feat. More significantly, the milestone pushed her tally to 18 international centuries across all formats, allowing her to surpass the legendary Australian cricketer Meg Lanning for the most international hundreds in women’s cricket.
Adding to her legendary status, Mandhana also overtook the iconic Mithali Raj to become the leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket history.
“I Didn’t Know”
Despite the magnitude of her achievements, a characteristically humble Mandhana admitted she was unaware of the history she had made during the match.
“I didn’t know all of this happened,” she said after being presented with the Player of the Match award. When asked who she would dedicate her historic century to, she remained grounded, citing her family as her primary support system: “I don’t have anyone in mind who I would like to dedicate it to, but definitely, my family.”
Adjusting to the Unknown
Reflecting on her tactical approach against an unfamiliar Hong Kong side, Mandhana explained the importance of adaptability. “We’re playing them for the first time, so when you come against a bowler who you don’t know a lot, you have to just forget that you’ve played whatever cricket. You just have to go, watch the ball, and I think it was more about just adjusting to the pace.”
While she cleared the ropes seven times and struck 14 boundaries, Mandhana remained self-deprecating regarding her technique, specifically against full tosses. “I would say that full tosses are not my strength,” she joked. “I’m happy that I could get away with a few of the full tosses today.”
She also praised the discipline of the Hong Kong bowlers, acknowledging their energy in the powerplay. “It’s really hard for me to play slower bowlers, but credit to them. They were really disciplined… the kind of energy they showed was something which we all can learn from.”
With two consecutive wins under their belt, the Indian team now shifts their focus to their highly anticipated clash against Pakistan this coming Saturday.
