ICC Reverses Demerit Point for Gaddafi Stadium Pitch After Appeal

Lahore, Pakistan – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reversed its decision to issue a demerit point to the pitch at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, following an appeal from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The original demerit was imposed after the third One Day International (ODI) between Pakistan and Australia on June 4th, which had received an "Unsatisfactory" rating from the match referee.

The decision to rescind the demerit point came after a thorough review by an ICC Appeals Panel. The panel meticulously examined video footage of the match, detailed reports from the match referee, and comments provided by the captains of both teams involved in the contest.

In an official statement, the ICC confirmed the reversal: "The demerit point imposed on Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, following an ‘Unsatisfactory’ rating for the third Men’s ODI between Pakistan and Australia on 4 June, has been rescinded." The statement further elaborated on the panel’s findings, noting that while the match referee had indeed followed the guidelines of the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, "the pitch did not demonstrate excessive unevenness or spin."

The appeals panel concluded that the playing surface used on June 8th (presumably referring to the date of the decision, not the match itself) was in line with the expected standards for a satisfactory cricket pitch. They specifically highlighted that the wicket "did not demonstrate excessive unevenness, seam movement or spin," which were key factors in their decision to withdraw the demerit point.

The original demerit point, along with others issued for matches played that month, had prompted appeals from both the PCB and Cricket Canada. This reversal is a significant victory for the PCB, ensuring that Gaddafi Stadium’s reputation as a top international venue remains untarnished by this particular incident.

Despite the initial controversy surrounding the pitch, the three-match ODI series itself was a competitive affair, with Pakistan ultimately triumphing over Australia by a margin of 2-1. Notably, spin bowling played a prominent role throughout the series, with spinners from both sides making significant impacts in all three encounters, irrespective of the pitch’s original "Unsatisfactory" rating. This further supports the Appeals Panel’s conclusion that the pitch did not exhibit excessive characteristics that unduly favored or hindered any particular style of play.
