In a significant breakthrough for rehabilitation medicine and assistive healthcare technology, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, and the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) have developed the country’s first validated Hindi version of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT). The music-based therapeutic framework is designed to help stroke survivors suffering from aphasia, a neurological language disorder that impairs the ability to process and produce speech, regain their verbal communication skills.
Published in the international peer-reviewed journal Aphasiology, the interdisciplinary study addresses a critical gap in neuro-rehabilitation within Hindi-speaking demographics. While Melodic Intonation Therapy has been extensively utilised in Western healthcare systems using English and other European languages, localized models were previously unavailable. Rather than relying on a literal translation of existing English protocols, the joint research team redesigned the therapy’s melodic pitch contours and rhythmic structures from the ground up to align naturally with the phonetic cadence and tonal flow of the Hindi language.
The clinical feasibility of the adapted protocol was tested in a pilot study conducted by a multidisciplinary team combining expertise across engineering, neurology, speech therapy, and otorhinolaryngology (ENT).
During the trial, six Hindi-speaking stroke survivors underwent a structured regimen consisting of 40 individual therapy sessions, each lasting between 45 and 60 minutes, supervised by certified speech therapists. Every participant successfully completed the program, demonstrating clinically meaningful improvements in functional language recovery without any reported adverse effects.
Highlighting the practical outcomes of the clinical trial, Prof. Rahul Garg of IIT Delhi noted that participants showed marked gains in verbal expression, demonstrating the ability to construct longer sentences, converse more spontaneously, and experience an improved overall quality of life. Co-lead researcher Prof NM Anoop Krishnan emphasized that while the findings present a strong positive signal, the trial’s sample size remains small, warranting larger-scale clinical evaluations to confirm efficacy. Moving forward, the team aims to integrate these therapeutic frameworks into digital healthcare platforms, broadening access to specialized speech therapy beyond metropolitan tertiary care hospitals.
