The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation document on Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology in the country.
The paper on the Regulatory Framework for V2X Communication sets out the road safety case and explains how ITS systems such as V2X can help prevent collisions.
It says that in 2023, 173,000 people were killed in crashes on India’s roads, with 463,000 people injured.
The paper outlines road safety challenges in India, citing “high accident rates, poor lane discipline and a mix of motorised and non-motorised traffic”.
Technologies such as cellular V2X (C-V2X) have the capacity to prevent road collisions, for example by sending warning messages to and from vehicles, drivers and infrastructure, thus improving safety.
There is already significant movement on recognising the potential of ITS to the Indian market.
For example, the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and ITS India last year signed a memorandum of understanding to drive innovation in connected and autonomous mobility.
In conclusion, the current consultation paper leans towards the 3GPP C-V2X radio along with ETSI ITS stack, which it says “is emerging as the most suitable choice for India due to its scalability, communication modes and alignment with future 5G networks”.
Comments on the consultation should be submitted to [email protected] by 28 May, with counter-comments submitted by 11 June.
