India Set to Bolster Military Might with US-Made Javelin Anti-Tank Systems

New Delhi: In a significant move to modernize its armed forces, India has confirmed plans to acquire the battle-tested FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank weapon system from the United States. The procurement marks a major milestone in the deepening strategic and defense partnership between New Delhi and Washington.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced the development, underscoring the success of the growing military engagement between the two nations. “BIG news! India plans to buy the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank system,” Gor stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Just as US Secretary of State Pete Hegseth highlighted at the May 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue, this is a great step forward in the US-India defence relationship and opens the door to co-production possibilities.”

Strengthening Interoperability

The US State Department originally granted approval for the potential sale of the Javelin system in November 2025. The deal, which covers up to 100 systems and 216 Excalibur guided artillery projectiles, is valued at approximately USD 93 million.

While specific details regarding the exact quantity of the current order and the final financial terms have not been disclosed, officials suggest the agreement will significantly enhance the defense industrial bases of both countries.

“The agreement creates new opportunities for the defence industries of both countries to work together,” Ambassador Gor added. “The engagement between our two nations is at record-high levels.”

Why the Javelin?

The Javelin is widely regarded as one of the most effective anti-tank weapons in the modern global arsenal. Developed by a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and RTX (formerly Raytheon), the system is a portable, shoulder-fired, “fire-and-forget” missile that allows infantry units to engage armored vehicles with high precision.

Key features of the system include:

• Automatic Tracking: Once fired, the missile tracks its target independently, allowing the operator to seek cover immediately.
• Top-Attack Capability: The Javelin executes an inverted U-shaped flight path, striking the top of a tank—the area with the least amount of armor—to ensure maximum lethality.
• Versatility: The system is designed for a “soft launch,” enabling it to be fired safely from enclosed spaces like bunkers or buildings, making it ideal for diverse combat environments.

A Growing Defense Partnership

This acquisition is part of a broader trend of India diversifying its defense procurement and strengthening ties with the US. As the world’s second-largest arms importer, India has been steadily integrating American-made technology into its military, including Apache and Chinook helicopters, P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, C-17 and C-130J transport aircraft, and M777 howitzers.

The move follows a comprehensive framework for a major defense partnership signed last October, which emphasizes high-level interoperability across all domains of warfare, including land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace. By acquiring the Javelin anti-tank weapon system, India is reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a robust, technology-driven deterrent, ensuring its forces are equipped with world-class capabilities to meet evolving regional security challenges.
