India Cementing Status as World’s Fastest-Growing Major Economy, Says Envoy at Nasdaq
NEW YORK — India’s economic momentum remains unrivaled on the global stage, with its latest GDP growth figures underscoring its position as the world’s fastest-growing large economy. Vinay Kwatra, the Indian Ambassador to the US, highlighted this economic resilience Wednesday morning as he presided over the opening bell ceremony at the Nasdaq stock exchange in the heart of Times Square.
The ceremony, which served as a symbolic bridge between the Indian government and global capital markets, underscored the nation’s robust fiscal health. Reflecting on the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, Ambassador Kwatra pointed to India’s 7.8 per cent GDP growth, a figure that continues to set the pace for major global economies.
A Transformation Driven by Innovation
During his address to industry leaders at the Nasdaq, Ambassador Kwatra emphasized that India is currently undergoing a “significant economic and technological transformation.” He attributed this trajectory to a multi-faceted foundation: a high-energy entrepreneurial ecosystem, rapidly expanding digital infrastructure, and a massive, young, and skilled workforce.
“One of the greatest pillars of our current and emerging partnership is the collaboration with the community of technology leadership companies here at Nasdaq,” Kwatra stated. He highlighted that this synergy is not limited to mere investment but extends to the sharing of technological infrastructure and the cross-border mobility of skilled professionals.
The Path to ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’
The Ambassador’s visit to the stock exchange comes at a pivotal time for India as it pursues its ambitious “Viksit Bharat 2047” (Developed India 2047) agenda. Kwatra noted that the Indian government is eager to forge deeper, more permanent partnerships with American businesses, investors, and institutional stakeholders.
“The opening bell ceremony is more than a market tradition,” Kwatra said. “It represents confidence in enterprise, innovation, and the possibility of future partnership. This spirit resonates very strongly with India.”
Diplomatic Ties
Ambassador Kwatra rang the opening bell on behalf of the government and people of India. He was joined by the Acting Consul General of India in New York, Vishal Harsh, and other prominent officials. The event was held just as Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in New York, following her attendance at the G20 finance ministerial meetings in Asheville, North Carolina.
The sentiment of the day was echoed by the Ambassador in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he reiterated that the Nasdaq-listed companies are “one of the great pillars” of the growing strength and promise of the bilateral relationship between India and the United States.
As India continues to balance domestic development with global integration, the ringing of the Nasdaq bell stands as a testament to the country’s rising influence in the global financial markets.
