NEW DELHI – Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar agreed to accelerate economic security cooperation, including efforts to strengthen supply chains for critical goods, in a bilateral meeting in New Delhi on Monday.
The two also agreed to speed up economic cooperation through such means as investment, with both the public and private sectors working together.
“Japan and India must serve as the driving force to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific vision,” Motegi said at the beginning of the talks, expressing his intention to move Japan-India ties forward by leveraging the Quad framework comprising Japan, the United States, Australia and India.
Jaishankar, who is India’s external affairs minister, also expressed his hope for further strengthening of the bilateral relationship.
The two ministers also discussed the situation in the Middle East and confirmed that they would maintain close communication on issues such as ensuring free, safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and cooperation on securing a stable supply of energy in the region.
