Departure of India Country Head: Julius Baer Appoints Interim Successor

Umang Papneja, Chief Executive Director of Julius Baer India since August 2022, has decided to leave the bank to pursue new challenges. He will remain in his role until July to ensure a smooth handover, according to a statement from the bank’s local entity.
It is already clear who will step in as country head—at least on an interim basis. Kunal Sumaya, Global Head of NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Coverage since 2022 and with the bank for 17 years, will take over the role. He will retain his current responsibilities, meaning he will now oversee both the onshore business and clients of Indian origin based outside their home country.

Rahul Malhotra, Head of the Emerging Markets region and member of the Global Wealth Management Committee, commented: «Kunal has a deep understanding of global Indian clients and the Indian market. His appointment as interim Head of India ensures that we can continue to serve these clients seamlessly and comprehensively, whether they are onshore or located elsewhere in the world. India is an important growth market for Julius Baer, and Kunal is ideally suited to lead during this transition phase.»
