Jury Unanimously Recommends Death Penalty for Jeffrey Crum in 1993 Murder of Jennifer Odom

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — After more than three decades of agonizing uncertainty, justice has moved one step closer for the family of 12-year-old Jennifer Odom. A Hernando County jury has unanimously recommended that 65-year-old Jeffrey Crum be sentenced to death for the 1993 abduction, rape, and murder of the young girl.

The recommendation came following a week of harrowing testimony in which Odom’s family laid bare the devastating, multi-generational impact of her loss. Last week, the jury officially found Crum guilty of the crimes, concluding a long-fought legal battle that finally links him to the cold case that haunted the Tampa Bay area for over 30 years.

The tragic sequence of events began on a school day in 1993, when Odom stepped off her school bus in Pasco County and vanished. Her body was discovered six days later in a remote Hernando County orange grove.

While the jury’s decision to pursue capital punishment was unanimous, the final sentencing rests with a judge.

A Family Shattered

On Monday, the court heard emotional victim impact statements that underscored the permanent void left by Odom’s death. Her stepfather, Clark Converse, described the profound psychological toll the murder took on their household.

“The pain she was in kept her from allowing me to try to comfort her,” Converse told the jury, referring to his wife, Renee. “I was unable to be her husband because all she wanted was her daughter. I began to believe that I had lost my wife and family.”

Renee Converse, Jennifer’s mother, provided an equally heart-wrenching account, describing her life as a “hole in her soul that will never be filled.”

“I am entirely brokenhearted and empty,” she wrote in a statement submitted to the court. “I have lost my peace, my trust in people, and my ability to find joy. I am constantly suspicious and cannot fathom that such ugly people exist in the world.”

The sentencing proceedings occurred on a particularly poignant anniversary: Tuesday would have marked Jennifer Odom’s 46th birthday.

A History of Violence

Crum was already incarcerated at the time of his conviction for the Odom case, serving a life sentence for a separate, heinous crime. In 1992—just a year before Odom was taken—Crum abducted and raped another teenager. That victim suffered a permanent brain injury during the attack, leaving her with lifelong disabilities.

The unanimous death sentence recommendation marks a significant conclusion to one of Florida’s most notorious decades-old cold cases.
