Kumar Sangakkara Urges Better Bowling and Fielding

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara calls for improved bowling execution and fielding ahead of IPL match against Gujarat Titans.

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara has highlighted the need for sharper bowling execution and enhanced fielding performance as the team faces a challenging match against Gujarat Titans on May 9, 2026. After suffering two defeats in their first two matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Sangakkara is keen to steer the team back to winning ways. “I think it’s just about trying to execute as well as possible and backing it up with some good fielding. We can be a little bit smarter, a little bit better in the field,” Sangakkara said in a pre-match press conference.

The coach specifically addressed the fielding issues that arose during the Royals’ loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, attributing some of the difficulties to the new LED lights recently installed at the stadium. He noted that these lights are significantly brighter than what the players are accustomed to, presenting challenges in visibility. “We’ve been trying to see what the right adjustment is, so that the fielders are comfortable and don’t lose the ball in the glare of the lights,” he explained. Sangakkara mentioned that discussions have taken place with the ground authorities to modify the lighting for improved conditions.

In the Royals’ second game against Delhi Capitals, Sangakkara observed that the visibility issues were resolved, allowing the fielders to perform more effectively. He also praised Donovan Ferreira for his significant improvement against both spin and pace bowling, attributing this growth to his experience in various franchise cricket environments.

When asked about the evolving nature of scoring rates in modern cricket, Sangakkara remarked on the importance of adaptability among players. He stated, “Adaptability is always the key. Consistency always depends on whether your strike rate is appropriate for the context of the game. Your attacking intent is always there. So, consistency is a byproduct. It’s not something that we look for.” This perspective reflects a broader trend in the sport where the ability to adjust to different conditions is becoming increasingly valuable.

As Kumar Sangakkara and his team prepare for their upcoming match, the emphasis on strategic execution and dynamic player performance will be crucial to their efforts in the Indian Premier League. The Rajasthan Royals are looking to turn their season around as they face the Gujarat Titans, hoping for a more cohesive performance on the field.
