Panna, a district in India’s Madhya Pradesh state renowned for holding the majority of the country’s diamond reserves, is no stranger to diamond discoveries. Despite this natural wealth, the region remains one of India’s least developed, grappling with widespread poverty, severe water scarcity, and high unemployment rates. These challenging conditions often drive residents to seek their fortunes as diamond hunters, hoping a significant find will transform their lives.
However, the reality for many miners in Panna is often less fortunate. A substantial number operate as daily-wage laborers for lease-holders. In such arrangements, any diamond discovered typically benefits the lease-holder rather than the individual miner who unearths it.
A recent discovery, however, offers a rare exception where the finders themselves stand to gain. Akhilesh Pal and six partners had leased a mine in Sarokha village two years ago for a modest sum, according to the Press Trust of India. The mine had been inactive for a year before recently reopening. Following heavy rains on Monday, Pal was inspecting the site when he spotted the valuable rock.
Pal recounted their years of effort: “We had been mining there for about two years, but we had no luck, so we closed the mine for a year. We had started another mine right next to it.” He added, “When we went there to inspect the new one, we also looked inside the old mine, and that’s where we found it – right on top.”
The newly discovered diamond is slated for sale at the upcoming quarterly auction in October, an event that draws buyers from both India and internationally. Following the sale, the government will levy a 12% royalty from the proceeds. The remaining sum will then be distributed equally among the seven workers, a life-altering prospect for some of the impoverished laborers involved. Local media reports have highlighted the personal impact, with three of the beneficiaries reportedly stating that their financial constraints had previously prevented them from marrying, a situation this windfall is now expected to remedy.
