Major Redesign and Enhanced Features

The Sony Xperia 1 VIII boasts a new design and advanced camera features, now available for pre-order in Europe starting at €1,499.

Sony has introduced its flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII, showcasing a significant redesign and advanced specifications tailored for photography enthusiasts. The new model stands apart from its predecessors with a fresh aesthetic while retaining some familiar features such as the larger top and bottom bezels that accommodate front-facing speakers and a dedicated shutter button.

The standout new design element includes a square camera module positioned at the top left corner of the device. The Xperia 1 VIII is available in four colour options: Graphite Black, Garnet Red, Iolite Silver, and Native Gold, with the gold variant exclusively offered in a 1TB storage configuration. The colours were developed under Sony’s “Ore” design language, which gives the phone a texture reminiscent of rough stone.

Under its sleek exterior, the Xperia 1 VIII is powered by a 6.5-inch FHD+ LTPO AMOLED display featuring a refresh rate of 120Hz. It is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile platform. Customers can choose between configurations with 256GB or 1TB of storage, accompanied by either 12GB or 16GB of RAM, respectively. Notably, the device supports microSD card expansion—a feature increasingly rare in high-end Android smartphones. Additionally, the Xperia 1 VIII retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, further enhancing its appeal.

The battery capacity measures 5,000 mAh, supporting both 30W wired and 15W wireless charging, although performance may vary. Camera features have also been upgraded: the phone sports a 48-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a newly designed telephoto camera with a 1/1.56-inch image sensor, offering fixed 2.9x optical zoom. This enhancement is said to provide improved performance in low-light conditions. A 12-megapixel camera is dedicated to selfies, ensuring versatility across photography applications.

Another notable addition is Sony’s AI Camera Assistant, which leverages Xperia Intelligence to provide real-time suggestions after recognising various photography elements such as the scene type and weather conditions. This feature aims to enhance user experience by recommending optimal camera settings based on specific circumstances.

The Xperia 1 VIII is currently open for pre-orders in the UK and Europe. In Europe, it starts at €1,499, while in the UK, the pricing begins at £1,399. Early adopters can also receive a complimentary pair of WH‑1000XM6 headphones with their pre-order. However, there are no announced plans for the device to be available in the United States.

As the smartphone landscape continues to evolve, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII aims to carve out its niche by appealing directly to photography enthusiasts and users looking for high-quality multimedia experiences. With its combination of a refined design and enhanced photographic capabilities, the Xperia 1 VIII is positioned to generate interest among consumers seeking the latest technology.
