Mansfield residents have been encouraged to do one small thing for the local environment, ahead of World Environment Day this Friday.

World Environment Day, this year, is focusing on how environmental development can bring economic benefits.

Matt Cranwell, managing director of Mansfield bus routes operator, Stagecoach East Midlands, has said that taking the bus for one journey a month, which would otherwise be taken by car, is one small step that everyone can take to improve their environmental impact.

He said: “It is easy to get overwhelmed and not know what to do to help our local environment, but the reality is that, individually, there are simple steps we can all take – and taking the bus is also a great value way to get around.

“Recent research, by trade association CPT, showed what a huge part buses can play in improving our environment.

“It found that if every person in Great Britain switched just one car trip to bus or coach per month each year, by 2030 it would create a cumulative reduction of two million tons of carbon dioxide.

“What’s more, a shift of two trips per month would result in a cumulative reduction of 19.5 million tons by 2050.”

Meanwhile, recent research, carried out on behalf of Stagecoach, has shown the impact of recent rises in fuel prices, caused by ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

It found that commuting by car costs, on average, a staggering £1,643.80 per year (equating to £31.61 per week) for drivers in our region.

This financial strain is driven by fuel prices, maintenance costs and parking fees.
