Manu Rishi Chadha Reveals How Nawazuddin Siddiqui Inspired His Portrayal of Pervez Musharraf

Actor Manu Rishi Chadha is earning widespread critical acclaim for his transformative performance as former Pakistan President and Army Chief Pervez Musharraf in the recently released series, Operation Safed Sagar. Tasked with playing the architect of the 1999 Kargil War, the actor has offered a rare glimpse into the meticulous preparation required to embody such a polarizing historical figure.

Balancing Realism and Acting Intuition

In a conversation with PTI, Chadha explained that while visual archives provided the foundation for his performance, the true challenge lay in capturing the essence of the man rather than just mimicking his mannerisms.

“Musharraf was a real person, but what mattered first was what had been written about him and how he would behave,” Chadha noted. While he turned to YouTube to study the military leader’s speech patterns and distinct physical gestures, he realized that a superficial imitation would not suffice. “For me, adopting the way he spoke would have been easy. But being comfortable in the character’s skin is very important,” he added.

The Influence of Nawazuddin Siddiqui

The breakthrough for Chadha’s performance came from an unexpected mentorship. While meeting with acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui to narrate a different film project, Chadha seized the opportunity to ask about Siddiqui’s approach to playing historical figures, specifically his lauded turn as the writer Saadat Hasan Manto.

Chadha recalled the invaluable advice Siddiqui shared: “He told me, ‘I didn’t have a visual reference. I had read about him, and I put my faith in the director. I would use my acting process to see whether what she was telling me connected with my human mind and heart.'”

Inspired by this philosophy, Chadha moved away from purely technical mimicry and began filtering Musharraf’s actions through his own “human mind and heart,” allowing for a more nuanced and grounded portrayal.
