Market recap: Four of top 10 firms add Rs 1.43 lakh crore; SBI bags biggest gains

Dalal Street Sees Mixed Fortunes: Top Firms Add ₹1.43 Lakh Crore Amid Volatility

Mumbai, India – The previous trading week on Dalal Street concluded with a discernible upward trajectory, as four of India’s ten most valuable companies collectively augmented their market capitalization by a substantial ₹1.43 lakh crore. This positive momentum was observed even as the broader market navigated a landscape of heightened volatility, influenced by new regulatory frameworks and ongoing geopolitical considerations.

Leading the charge among the gainers was State Bank of India (SBI), which emerged as the week’s biggest beneficiary among the top-tier firms. SBI’s market valuation soared by an impressive ₹63,922.03 crore, reaching a staggering ₹10,11,721.84 crore. Following closely in its wake were industrial titans Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Larsen & Toubro, all of whom contributed significantly to the overall market upswing.

The overall market sentiment also reflected this positive trend, with the benchmark indices registering healthy gains. The BSE Sensex advanced by 404.53 points, or 0.51 percent, while the NSE Nifty climbed 187.05 points, marking a 0.76 percent increase.

Market analysts attributed the week’s mixed yet ultimately positive performance to a confluence of factors. "Markets ended the week with modest gains despite heightened volatility, as investors navigated the roll-out of the new Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework for F&O stocks, the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision, and lingering geopolitical uncertainties," explained Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, in a statement to PTI.

Delving deeper into the individual performances, Reliance Industries, a perennial market leader, saw its valuation rise by ₹32,816.4 crore, pushing its total market capitalization to ₹18,01,925.19 crore. Technology giant TCS also reported a notable increase of ₹31,875.35 crore, with its market capitalization settling at ₹8,87,770.13 crore. Engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro witnessed its valuation grow by ₹14,637.76 crore, reaching ₹5,56,482.45 crore.

However, the gains enjoyed by these four market heavyweights were partially tempered by declines experienced by the remaining six firms within the top-10 list. Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), and Hindustan Unilever collectively shed an estimated ₹1.23 lakh crore from their market value.

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) registered the most significant decline, with its valuation falling by ₹40,543.23 crore to ₹4,96,891.82 crore. Following LIC, Bajaj Finance experienced a substantial loss of ₹37,168.96 crore, concluding the week with a market capitalization of ₹6,73,648.55 crore.

HDFC Bank, a prominent player in the financial sector, saw its market capitalization decrease by ₹24,183.16 crore, settling at ₹11,27,967.47 crore. ICICI Bank, another major banking institution, shed ₹9,507.67 crore, bringing its valuation to ₹10,20,370.63 crore.

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel lost ₹7,581.65 crore in market value, with its valuation at week’s end standing at ₹12,22,423.98 crore. Lastly, consumer goods stalwart Hindustan Unilever’s market capitalization fell by ₹4,793.16 crore to ₹4,88,808.97 crore.

Despite these fluctuations throughout the week, Reliance Industries successfully maintained its position as India’s most valued firm. The top ten most valued companies, in order, were Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, TCS, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, LIC, and Hindustan Unilever. The dynamic shifts within this elite group underscore the ever-evolving nature of India’s vibrant financial markets.
