In a landmark achievement for Indian science, Professor Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru, has been awarded the prestigious 2026 COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal. This historic recognition makes her the first Indian woman—and only the third woman globally—to receive this esteemed honor.

The medal, presented at the 46th COSPAR Scientific Assembly in Florence, Italy, is a joint initiative by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It recognizes outstanding contributions to space research, with a particular emphasis on achievements within developing nations.

A Legacy of Scientific Excellence

Professor Subramaniam joins an elite group of Indian scientists to have received the award, including U.R. Rao (1996), Gurbax Singh Lakhina (2014), and Anil Bhardwaj (2024). Her inclusion in this list underscores her pivotal role in advancing the frontiers of stellar physics and galactic research.

With a career spanning over three decades, Professor Subramaniam has dedicated her life to uncovering the mysteries of the universe, focusing on star clusters, the evolution of stars, and the complex structures of distant galaxies. Her academic impact is significant, evidenced by roughly 175 research papers and the mentorship of 15 PhD students.

Pioneering Space-Based Observation

Professor Subramaniam is perhaps best known for her instrumental work on AstroSat, India’s first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory. Serving as the calibration scientist for the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT), she led the essential in-orbit verification process. Because Earth’s atmosphere blocks much of the ultraviolet spectrum, her work was critical in enabling scientists to observe celestial phenomena that were previously obscured.

Beyond her work with AstroSat, she has been a driving force in international collaborative efforts, including the Thirty Meter Telescope project. She is also currently the Principal Investigator for INSIST, a proposed next-generation space telescope designed to further enhance India’s ultraviolet-optical observation capabilities.

Breaking Barriers

Her recent international recognition follows a history of “firsts.” In 2019, she became the first woman to lead the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Earlier in 2024, her contributions were celebrated nationally when she received the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar – Vigyan Shri, a top-tier honor recognizing her profound influence on space science and technology.

A Beacon for Future Scientists

Professor Subramaniam’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that the foundation of India’s space program extends beyond rocket engineering. It is built upon the curiosity of researchers who spend decades analyzing the light of distant stars and developing the intricate technology required to observe them.

As she continues her work at the helm of the IIA, Professor Subramaniam stands as a role model for the next generation of students, demonstrating that visionary leadership and deep scientific inquiry remain the keys to unlocking the mysteries of the cosmos.
