Mum, 34, and son, 7, confirmed dead in ‘tragic accident’ in water at London park

Police said the victims, a mother and son, aged 34 and seven years, ‘very sadly lost their lives’ after getting into difficulty in the water at Elthorne Park in Ealing

A 34-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy have been confirmed as the mother and son who died after getting into difficulty in the water at a west London park.

Police were called to Elthorne Park in Ealing just before 4:30pm on Saturday afternoon, where the pair were recovered from the water. Tragically, they both died at the scene. Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, the Metropolitan Police said in an update today.

The force said investigating officers have established “it was a tragic accident” with the deaths “being treated as non-suspicious”.

“Further enquiries carried out by officers into the incident have established it was a tragic accident and the deaths of the woman and child who very sadly lost their lives are being treated as non-suspicious,” a statement read. “We can confirm they are a mother and son, aged 34 and seven years.

“Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. This is understandably an incredibly difficult time for them and they have requested that their privacy be respected.”

The force previously thanked emergency crews and members of the public for doing their “very best” in an “incredibly challenging situation”.

A spokesperson said at the time: “Officers are at the scene of an incident in Elthorne Park, Ealing. Police were called at 4.29pm following reports of two people in difficulty in the water. Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

“A woman and child were recovered from the water. We are not able to confirm their ages at this stage. Very sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services who provided urgent medical care, they were both pronounced dead at the scene.”
