Neeraj Chopra Secures Spot in Diamond League Finals Despite Limited Season

India’s golden boy of athletics, Neeraj Chopra, has officially qualified for the prestigious Diamond League Finals, demonstrating remarkable consistency despite a season hampered by injury. The season-ending showdown is set to take place in Brussels on September 5.

Overcoming Injury to Reach the Top Six

Chopra secured his place among the world’s elite by finishing sixth in the overall Diamond League standings with 12 points. His qualification is particularly impressive given his limited participation; the Olympic medalist competed in only two of the five Diamond League meetings that featured men’s javelin this year.

The 26-year-old has been battling a persistent lower back injury since September of last year, a setback that forced him to delay his return to competitive action until the Doha meeting on June 19. While his path to the finals was restricted, his performance remained high-caliber. He secured second-place finishes in both Doha and the Lausanne Diamond League on August 21, where he registered a season-best throw of 88.05 meters. This followed his silver-medal effort at the Commonwealth Games, where he recorded a throw of 85.83 meters despite not being at full fitness.

The Competition in Brussels

The Brussels event, held over September 4–5, will feature the top six javelin throwers from the season standings. The competition for the title remains fierce, with Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage entering the finals as the clear favorite. Pathirage has dominated the circuit this year, topping the standings with 39 points after winning four of the five qualifying events. The 23-year-old sensationally cleared the 90-meter mark twice this season, including a massive 92.07-meter throw at the recent Zurich meeting.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters holds the second position in the standings with 35 points, followed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott (23 points), the USA’s Curtis Thompson (20 points), and Kenya’s veteran athlete Julius Yego (13 points). Notably absent from the field is Germany’s Julian Weber; despite a 90.40-meter throw earlier this season, he will miss the finals due to injury.

High Stakes in Belgium

The Diamond League Finals offer not only prestige but also significant financial rewards. The winner of each discipline receives a trophy and a minimum of USD 30,000, with prize money descending to USD 1,000 for the eighth-place finisher. Should the men’s javelin be categorized as a “Diamond+” discipline, the winner’s purse will double to USD 60,000.
