Odisha’s voter rolls have witnessed 9.8 lakh deletions amid ongoing elector mapping, sparking concerns over wrongful removals.
The process of elector mapping in Odisha has resulted in the removal of approximately 9.8 lakh names from the electoral rolls. This change comes ahead of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) designed to update the state’s voter registrations.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office reported on April 18 that Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) were responsible for the deletions since the initiation of the mapping. The significant number of removals has raised alarms among voters and electoral officials alike.
Concerns have emerged about the integrity of the deletions, with numerous complaints indicating that names of eligible voters were removed incorrectly. Reports include instances where voters were still present but found absent from the updated rolls. In particular, the role of Booth Level Officers has come under scrutiny, with allegations that proper field visits and verification measures were not adequately executed before removing names.
