Digital Disinformation: Fabricated Claims Target BJP Leaders During India’s 80th Independence Day

As India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, a surge of politically charged misinformation swept across social media. Disinformation campaigns targeted leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with false claims that they had committed acts of national disrespect by mishandling the Indian tricolour during official ceremonies.

The Fabricated Scandals

Two distinct pieces of misleading content gained traction on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, drawing sharp criticism from opposition figures and the general public.

In one instance, a viral image purported to show BJP National President Nitin Nabin hoisting an inverted Indian flag, with the green stripe positioned at the top instead of the correct saffron orientation. The post, which cast aspersions on Nabin’s patriotism, was widely shared by users labeling the leadership as "illiterate."

Separately, a video shared by Congress party leader Supriya Shrinate alleged that BJP members in the Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh had hoisted a party flag in place of the national tricolour during Independence Day festivities. That post, which racked up nearly one million views before its eventual removal, was used to paint the ruling party as dismissive of national symbols.

The Truth Behind the Visuals

Investigations have confirmed that both narratives were entirely fabricated:

  • The Inverted Flag: A digital forensic analysis revealed that the photo of Nitin Nabin was a doctored version of an image originally posted by the BJP’s verified handle on August 13. The original photo shows Nabin proudly holding the flag in the correct orientation as part of the "Har Ghar Tiranga" (Tricolor in all homes) campaign. The BJP has since filed a formal police complaint regarding the digital alteration of the image.
  • The Misattributed Video: The footage from Chhattisgarh, used to imply a lack of patriotism during the August 15 celebrations, was found to be from a completely different context. Through a review of keyframes, the clip was traced back to an event held in March 2026—a BJP training workshop at the Yashwant Rao Smriti Auditorium—where party workers were hoisting the party’s official flag, not the national one.

A Pattern of Misinformation

Local BJP leader Ajay Chandrakar addressed the confusion on August 15, releasing a side-by-side comparison of the misattributed training session video and the legitimate Independence Day ceremony. He publicly accused the opposition Congress party of orchestrating a smear campaign to defame the BJP.

The Congress party has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the debunked claims.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of disinformation in the digital age, particularly during sensitive national holidays. In India, public disrespect toward the national flag—including improper hoisting or mutilation—is a serious criminal offense punishable by up to three years in prison and heavy fines. The weaponization of "fake news" to suggest such criminal behavior highlights the growing challenge authorities face in maintaining political discourse, as even well-known figures become targets of sophisticated digital manipulation.
