One person is dead and another has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a car struck pedestrians outside a fan convention in inner Melbourne.
A car mounted the kerb on Saturday afternoon shortly before 5pm outside the Melbourne showgrounds, where the Supanova Comic Con event was being held.
Victoria police said major collision investigation unit detectives were investigating a fatal collision in Ascot Vale on Saturday afternoon.
“It is believed a grey Toyota mounted a kerb on Langs Road and struck two pedestrians just before 5pm,” police said in a statement. “Sadly, one of the pedestrians who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.”
“The second pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.”
A man was arrested and will be interviewed by police.
“The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established and the investigation remains ongoing,” Victoria police said.
Thousands of comic and gaming fans flock to Supanova Comic Con every year, with the Melbourne event adding crowds of visitors to an already-busy area.
Celebrities including Stranger Things cast member Jamie Campbell Bower and Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, were set to headline the expo.
