Two boys and a 20-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Emergency services were called to a suspected knife attack in Newcastle city centre just after midnight on Monday.
A number of police cordons remained in place in the city centre this morning as officers investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Monument Metro station was also closed in the early hours of this morning but has since reopened.
Two boys, aged 16 and 17, and a 20-year-old man were arrested following the incident. The man and 16-year-boy, as well as another 17-year-old were taken to hospital with “serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article”, police said.
All three remain in hospital for treatment of injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said the force has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident – and a number of police cordons were in place for enquiries to be carried out. These have now been removed.
They added: “At this early stage of the investigation it is believed that all of those involved are known to one another. There is also an increased police presence in the city centre to offer reassurance to the community.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called to an incident in the Blackett Street and John Dobson Street area of Newcastle shortly after midnight on 20 July.
“We dispatched three double crewed ambulances, a duty officer, a clinical team leader, three vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and a doctor. Three patients were taken to hospital – two with serious injuries.”
A spokesperson for Metro operator Nexus said: “Monument Metro station was closed in the early hours of this morning, Monday 20 July, at the request of Northumbria Police. This was due to an earlier incident in a city centre street of Newcastle. The Metro station was able to re-open to customers just after 7am.”
A previous version of this story said two boys had been arrested and two males were fighting for life in hospital. Police have issued a new update and this article has been updated.
