"Premalu" Vanishes from OTT Ahead of Hindi Remake, Sparking Fan Outcry
Mumbai, India – The acclaimed Malayalam romantic comedy, "Premalu," starring Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, has inexplicably disappeared from its primary streaming platform, JioHotstar, just months before its Hindi adaptation, "Prem Keetanu," is slated for theatrical release. This sudden removal has left a trail of disappointed fans and ignited a heated discussion online regarding intellectual property and access to original content.
The timing of the disappearance has raised eyebrows, coinciding directly with the unveiling of the "Prem Keetanu" teaser. Almost immediately after the Hindi remake’s promotional material hit the internet, fans discovered that the original "Premalu" was no longer available on JioHotstar. Social media platforms quickly became a forum for frustrated viewers, many arguing that the original film should remain accessible, even as its adaptation prepares for a wider release.
Previously, "Premalu" was available for streaming on JioHotstar in Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi dubbed versions. Interestingly, its Telugu-dubbed counterpart continues to stream on Aha, adding another layer to the mystery surrounding its removal from other platforms.
Fan Frustration and the "Prem Keetanu" Teaser
The reported removal has intensified as "Prem Keetanu" commences its promotional campaign. The minute-long teaser, released earlier this week, instantly led many viewers to identify it as a remake of the beloved "Premalu." However, the teaser’s distinct tone and subtle narrative alterations have also prompted questions about the fidelity of the Hindi adaptation to its source material.
Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, known for his work on popular web series like "TVF Aspirants" and "Aam Aadmi Family," "Prem Keetanu" features a cast including Veer Pahariya, Aafiya Sayed, Aparshakti Khurana, Rakesh Bedi, and Nikhil Vijay. While it broadly follows the romantic beats of "Premalu," a key divergence appears to be the protagonists’ initial meeting in a college setting, as opposed to later in life as depicted in the original. Aafiya Sayed makes her Hindi film debut with this project.
The official Hindi remake rights were acquired for "Prem Keetanu," which is produced by Gaurav Verma under Avanika Films in collaboration with Bhavana Studios – the very production house behind the original "Premalu." Deepak Kingrani has penned the screenplay, with Arjun Kukreti serving as cinematographer and Ritesh Soni as editor.
The "Premalu" Phenomenon
Directed by Girish AD, "Premalu" emerged as one of Malayalam cinema’s most significant blockbusters of 2024. Produced on a modest budget of approximately Rs 3 crore, the romantic comedy captivated audiences worldwide, reportedly earning an impressive Rs 136.25 crore. This remarkable success propelled "Premalu" into the exclusive Rs 100-crore club, solidifying its place as a cultural phenomenon.
The film’s plot revolves around a group of young Malayalis who embark on a journey of friendship and love after relocating to Hyderabad for work. The ensemble cast, alongside Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, includes Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Shyam Mohan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Mathew Thomas, and Althaf Salim.
While a sequel to "Premalu" was initially announced, its production has since been delayed. In the interim, Girish AD and Mamitha Baiju have reunited for "Bethlehem Kudumba Unit," co-starring Nivin Pauly, which is slated for release on August 21st.
"Prem Keetanu" is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 2, 2026. The removal of the original "Premalu" from streaming platforms just as its remake gears up for promotion raises significant questions about streaming rights, audience access, and the value placed on original works in an increasingly adaptive cinematic landscape.
