Southeast Asian Folklore Comes Alive as the 17th Singapore Night Festival Returns

JAKARTA, TEMPO.CO – The vibrant cultural heart of Singapore has been transformed into an ethereal landscape of light and legend. The 17th edition of the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) officially kicked off on Friday, August 21, 2026, inviting locals and tourists alike to experience the city’s storied past through a modern, luminous lens.

Running until September 5, this year’s festival theme, "Myths and Legends," draws deep inspiration from the historical layers of Fort Canning—once known as Bukit Larangan or "Forbidden Hill." The event serves as a grand stage for regional creative talents to reimagine Southeast Asian history, blending traditional narratives with cutting-edge urban technology.

A Masterclass in Creative Collaboration

Festival Director Qazim Karim emphasized that the program was designed to unpack the historical complexity of the festival’s location. "There are so many layers of history to explore," Karim noted. "By focusing on myths and legends, we have created a space where traditional storytelling meets contemporary artistic innovation."

The centerpiece of the festival, "Tales of Earth and Sea," is a stunning facade projection mapping display gracing the National Museum of Singapore. The work represents a massive tri-national collaboration: designed by the Indonesian multimedia collective The Fox, The Folks, it features a bespoke soundtrack composed by Singapore’s Artusik and Malaysia’s Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

Beyond the main museum, the inaugural MALAM Projection Mapping Competition at The Cathay offers a platform for emerging digital artists from across the region to showcase their technical prowess and narrative creativity.

Navigating the Festival

Spanning the historic Bras Basah.Bugis precinct, the festival features 97 distinct programs organized into four primary zones:

  • The Museum Zone
  • Zone 1: Funan to Chijmes
  • Zone 2: Cathay Green to Waterloo Centre
  • Zone 3: Bras Basah Complex and Stamford Arts Centre

The festival operates daily from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with hours extended until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The precinct is highly accessible via public transit, with multiple stations—City Hall, Bras Basah, Bencoolen, Dhoby Ghaut, and Bugis—within walking distance of the exhibits.

Beyond the Lights: Immersive Experiences

The 2026 edition distinguishes itself through interactive and roving performances. The Dutch theater group Close-Act Theatre is making its Southeast Asian debut with "Birdmen," a surreal spectacle featuring massive, illuminated puppets navigated by stilt-walkers that wander through the festival grounds.

For those seeking more hands-on exploration, the festival offers:

  • Immersive Installations: "Stormy Straits" at Bugis Street Art Lane uses luminous scaffolding to evoke the daring voyages of ancient seafarers, while the speech-activated "Rising of Sister Islands" kinetic wall at Funan responds to the voices of passersby.
  • Cultural Journeys: For an intimate experience, "The Lost Legacy of Fort Canning"—a 70-minute nocturnal audio walking trail—offers a deep dive into the area’s forgotten narratives.
  • Community Engagement: The Stamford Arts Centre and Temasek Shophouse host an array of eco-friendly artisan markets and traditional opera performances, ensuring that the celebration fosters a connection to heritage.

While the vast majority of these experiences are free to the public, select workshops and ticketed theatrical shows are available for those looking for a more specialized cultural immersion. As the festival lights continue to shine across the city, the 2026 Singapore Night Festival cements its reputation as a premier destination for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
