School pupils and staff marked last week’s World Environment Day with a new event aimed at inspiring climate action.
All 14 secondary schools from the Meridian Trust, which includes Stamford Welland Academy, headed to Weldon Village Academy for the Trust’s inaugural Environment Day.
It brought together more than 140 student Eco-Council representatives and staff Climate Champions from each school.

Pupils took part in a series of workshops and activities designed to deepen their understanding of climate change and how to take action.
They learned how to assess biodiversity, energy use, waste management and environmental quality and attended climate science sessions.
The day ended with each school’s Eco-Council beginning work on a sustainability project timeline, finding steps they can take within their own school during the next academic year.

“Climate change is one of the defining challenges facing today’s young people,” said event organiser Mike Smith, the Trust’s curriculum director of geography.
“Environment Day is about ensuring our students not only understand the science behind that challenge, but also recognise their own ability to be part of the solution.”
