Indian Markets Eye Stability as Oil Prices Retreat; Global Cues in Focus

Indian equity markets are set for another day of cautious optimism this Wednesday as investors weigh the potential benefits of falling global crude prices against a backdrop of critical international economic data releases.

Following a robust recovery in the final hour of Tuesday’s session, both the Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex closed in the green. The Nifty 50 finished the day at 24,334.55, up 115.50 points (0.48%), while the BSE Sensex climbed 286.98 points (0.37%) to settle at 77,656.09. This late-session rally, spurred by monthly derivatives expiry, has provided a morale boost to domestic traders.

The Crude Oil Factor

The primary catalyst for Wednesday’s market sentiment is the cooling of oil prices. Brent crude fell by 2.6% to $86.30 a barrel following reports that Iran and Oman have discussed establishing a joint temporary navigational corridor through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The agreement to clear mines from the waterway has significantly eased geopolitical supply-disruption fears.

“Recent developments involving Iran and Oman have raised cautious optimism that supply-disruption risks could ease,” said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money. “Any further progress in this area will likely provide continued support to energy markets and bolster global risk sentiment.”

Institutional Flows and Global Sentiment

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) continue to show confidence in the Indian growth story, marking their second consecutive session of net buying with inflows totaling Rs 1,594 crore on Tuesday. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also remained active, adding Rs 230 crore to the market, according to provisional NSE data.

Global indices present a mixed picture. While Asian markets showed varied performance on Wednesday morning, global sentiment remains supported by a decline in the US 10-year Treasury yield, which stood at 4.634% after a 6.5 basis point drop.

Key Global Triggers Ahead

Investors are currently bracing for a high-impact window of news, beginning with the highly anticipated second-quarter earnings from Nvidia. Market participants are eager to see if the tech giant’s performance can sustain the current AI-driven spending boom; analysts are projecting a massive 82.8% year-on-year increase in third-quarter sales.

Furthermore, US inflation data—scheduled for release later today—is being scrutinized by analysts ahead of the high-profile Jackson Hole economic symposium taking place this weekend. These figures are expected to provide further clarity on the trajectory of global interest rates.

Domestic Watchlist

While the Indian currency and debt markets are closed for a local holiday on Wednesday, equity trading remains active. Market participants are expected to monitor several corporate developments closely, with specific attention on Indian stock markets players such as Cipla, Ceat, Dabur, and Honasa Consumer, all of which are seeing heightened activity following recent business updates.

In the commodities space, gold continues to command attention, trading near its three-month high at $4,646.08 per ounce, reflecting the persistent demand for safe-haven assets amidst lingering global economic uncertainty.
