Subnautica 2 Deepens Co-op Experience with Major "Buddy System" Update, Early Access 2 Teased
August 19, 2024 – The highly anticipated underwater survival and crafting game, Subnautica 2, dives deeper into its multiplayer potential today with the release of its "Buddy System" update, version 1.2. This significant patch introduces a raft of new features designed to enhance co-operative gameplay, as revealed by Creative Director Anthony Gallegos in a comprehensive video breakdown. Players can now expect more immersive interactions, streamlined resource management, and improved navigation within the game’s expansive aquatic environments.
At the heart of the 1.2 update is Unknown Worlds’ first iteration of proximity chat, a groundbreaking addition for Subnautica 2. This in-game voice chat system allows for local communication between players, with an ingenious twist. As friends drift further apart, their voices will progressively degrade, shifting to a radio-like static before eventually becoming almost unintelligible. "I think it definitely adds to the tension of it," Gallegos noted, highlighting how this feature will undoubtedly amplify the game’s atmospheric suspense.
Beyond voice communication, the update introduces a suite of social and practical enhancements. Players can now express themselves through a new emote system, offering options to cheer, clap, or even convey annoyance. Gallegos expressed excitement at the prospect of players utilizing these emotes "out of context" to generate amusing and unexpected moments within the game.
Resource management receives a major quality-of-life improvement with inventory sharing. Instead of the cumbersome process of dropping items for a friend to pick up, players can now directly access and swap items from each other’s inventories with ease. This streamlined exchange promises to make expeditions and base-building far more efficient.
The dangers of the deep are slightly mitigated by the introduction of player revives. Should a companion succumb to the perils of the ocean, teammates now have a window of opportunity to share oxygen and bring them back into the action, fostering a stronger sense of teamwork and mutual reliance.
Personalization options are expanded with the addition of two new player characters, Grace and Jegna, alongside two fresh suit colors. These additions aim to increase player diversification in multiplayer sessions, though Gallegos assures players that the freedom to create a uniform look for their squad remains. He also confirmed that more customization options will be rolled out throughout the Early Access period.
Navigating the vast underwater world is made simpler with the new tracking tag. This short-range beacon can be deployed in the environment or placed within portable storage, allowing players to easily find their way back to crucial locations or equipment. Furthermore, if a player perishes with a tracking tag in their inventory, it extends the range of their "black box" signal, making the retrieval of lost gear significantly easier.
The user interface also receives a significant overhaul. Improved HUD icons now scale down by default, only enlarging to display full details when moused over. This design choice aims to reduce clutter, particularly when multiple beacons are in close proximity, allowing for more precise information access without overwhelming the screen. Similarly, improved pinned recipes and enhancements to the base builder tool promise a more intuitive and less confusing experience for players constructing their underwater havens.
Gallegos emphasized that these are just a selection of the new features in the 1.2 update, with comprehensive patch notes expected soon. Looking ahead, Unknown Worlds is actively progressing on the much-anticipated Early Access 2 update. This future release is set to introduce an entirely new region, expand the game’s narrative, introduce new progression systems, and bring exciting new vehicles to the forefront. A tantalizing glimpse of this work-in-progress was shared, hinting at the expansive content yet to come.
"The whole reason that we do make games at Unknown Worlds in this way is because we think we make the best games possible when you participate in this development alongside us," Gallegos concluded, underscoring the developer’s commitment to community feedback. "And I think that this update shows that we really want to listen and prioritize the things that our fans are asking for."
The "Buddy System" update marks a significant step forward for Subnautica 2, promising a more connected, engaging, and less isolating experience for players venturing into its stunning yet dangerous depths.
