Suppliers Partnership for the Environment Releases New Circular Automotive Packaging Guidance

Automotive Industry Takes Major Step Toward Sustainability with New Circular Packaging Guidance

WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2026 — The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) has officially released a comprehensive new guidance document aimed at reshaping how the automotive sector manages material waste. Titled Applying Circular Economy Principles to Automotive Packaging, the resource provides manufacturers and suppliers with a strategic framework to foster a more sustainable supply chain.

As the global automotive industry faces increasing pressure to minimize its environmental footprint, this new initiative serves as a practical roadmap for reducing packaging waste and retaining material value. By implementing these principles, companies can better transition from traditional, linear consumption models toward a more efficient, circular approach.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Developed by SP’s Sustainable Packaging Work Group, the guidance moves beyond simple recycling tips. It highlights that true circularity is achieved through a combination of thoughtful design and robust logistics. The document outlines how companies can effectively manage packaging throughout its entire lifecycle—focusing on reuse, life extension, and recovery.

“Advancing packaging circularity starts with considering how packaging is designed, used, recovered, and ultimately returned to productive use,” said Kellen Mahoney, Executive Director of the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment. “This guidance provides companies with a practical framework for evaluating opportunities to reduce waste, preserve material value, and identify approaches that make sense for their own operations and supply chains.”

The report emphasizes that design alone is not enough. Success, it argues, relies heavily on the supporting infrastructure, including efficient collection, sorting, storage, and transportation systems, as well as maintaining access to viable end markets for reclaimed materials.

Building on a Foundation of Change

This publication represents the latest milestone in an ongoing series of industry-leading resources produced by the SP. The organization has previously tackled complex sustainability challenges, including:

  • Designing for recyclability
  • Materials collection and handling best practices
  • Standards for reporting recycled and renewable content
  • Standardizing waste disposition metrics
  • Analyzing global packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy trends

For stakeholders across the automotive value chain, this new circular automotive packaging initiative offers the tools necessary to turn environmental goals into operational reality.

The guidance document is available for download at no cost. Industry professionals and stakeholders are encouraged to visit www.supplierspartnership.org/circular-packaging/ to access the full report and learn more about implementing these practices.
