The first trailer of ‘Gladiator’ director Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi thriller film ‘The Dog Stars,’ has been released. The film stars ‘Euphoria’ star Jacob Elordi, alongside Margaret Qualley. The film also stars Josh Brolin. The film is based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel and was adapted for the screen by Mark L. Smith, whose previous work includes ‘Twisters.’ ‘The Dog Stars’ is Scott’s first film after directing 2024’s ‘Gladiator II.’ The film also stars Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong and Allison Janney.
What is ‘The Dog Stars’ about
In a post-pandemic futuristic world, Hig (Jacob Elordi) and an ex-Marine (Josh Brolin) defend their space and each other despite their differences. The trailer shows a near-futuristic world, with Hig as a solitary civilian pilot who has lost his wife and only has his pet dog. He, along with an ex-Marine, tries to defend an airstrip in Colorado from invaders. A crash landing at a secluded ranch introduces the duo to Cima (Margaret Qualley) and her father, a protective rancher (Guy Pearce). Their chance encounter and further collaborative effort give them hope for a bright and intelligent future.
Paul Mescal was originally set to play Hig
Paul Mescal, who starred in Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ sequel, was originally set to play the leading role in ‘The Dog Stars,’ but exited in early 2025, citing scheduling conflicts tied to Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopics. In January 2025, according to a Variety report, Elordi was in talks to replace Mescal for the leading role, while noting that his schedule was similarly packed while he filmed both ‘Wuthering Heights’ and the third season of ‘Euphoria.’ Despite the scheduling chaos, Elordi remained tied to the project, which began production in Italy in April 2025.
