The Empire State Building has officially reclaimed the spotlight as America’s top-rated tourist attraction, according to Tripadvisor’s latest “Best of the Best Things to Do” rankings for 2026.
The iconic New York City skyscraper ascended to the number one spot, knocking the NASA Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex—the reigning favorite from the previous year—down to third place. Despite the slide in rankings, the Space Coast attraction remains a powerhouse for tourism, currently holding third place in the national list and maintaining a remarkable third-place spot on Tripadvisor’s global rankings, fueled by over 15,000 five-star reviews.
Tripadvisor’s methodology for the list relies on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews collected over the past year. The findings encompass a diverse range of destinations, from historic landmarks and museums to sprawling natural wonders.
“The Empire State Building is arguably the most iconic building in New York City,” Tripadvisor noted in its announcement. “Visitors can expect two observation decks with sweeping skyline views. Other than a classic photo-op, you can learn about the building’s history through informative displays and videos, then have a meal at one of the seven on-site restaurants.”
Following the Empire State Building, Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, took the number two spot. Florida still performed well in the national rankings, boasting two of the top four slots. Just behind the Kennedy Space Center, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo secured the number four position, representing the Sunshine State’s continued appeal for both space enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The list highlights a heavy concentration of top-tier attractions in major metropolitan areas, with New York City sites—including Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art—making frequent appearances. However, the diverse top 26 list also spans the nation, featuring landmarks such as the National Museum of World War II Aviation in Colorado, the Grand Canyon, and Alcatraz Island.
While the shuffle in the top three marks a shift in traveler preferences for 2026, the consistent high ranking of the Kennedy Space Center underscores its status as a premier destination for both domestic and international visitors.
