India Eyeing Tilak Varma as Key Middle-Order Backup for ODI World Cup
New Delhi: With an eye on long-term squad stability ahead of next year’s ODI World Cup, the Indian cricket team management and selection committee have begun identifying critical backups to fortify the middle order. According to recent reports, young batting prospect Tilak Varma has emerged as a primary candidate to serve as an understudy to Shreyas Iyer in the top six.
Strategic Versatility
The move to groom Varma stems from a tactical desire to introduce more variety into the batting lineup. As a left-handed batter, Varma is viewed as a vital asset to disrupt the rhythm of opposition bowlers and break the monotony of a right-hand-dominant top order.
Furthermore, team management has explicitly requested Varma to dedicate time to refining his off-spin bowling. There is a growing concern regarding the lack of part-time bowling options among the top-order batters, which frequently places excessive pressure on the specialist bowlers and the lower-middle order to perform heavy lifting.
Addressing Structural Vulnerabilities
A BCCI source revealed that Head Coach Gautam Gambhir and Captain Shubman Gill are concerned about the current lack of ready-made backups for the middle order. With all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy managing recurring injury concerns, the leadership is keen to develop a specialist batter who can reliably contribute at least four overs per match.
“The team has to be prepared for conditions in South Africa for the upcoming World Cup,” the source noted. “Iyer’s game against pace and bounce remains untested in recent times, and we must account for the fitness of our senior players. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul are all in the later stages of their careers, and the team needs younger, fitter backups to ensure we aren’t caught off-guard.”
Selection Philosophy
The selection committee is currently exercising caution regarding the “musical chairs” approach to batting positions. While experimenting has been necessary in the past—such as playing Ruturaj Gaikwad at No. 4—the management now prefers to groom players for specific roles. Consequently, the selectors are hesitant to rush players like Devdutt Padikkal into the ODI setup, as they believe his natural game is best suited to opening the batting.

While the upcoming ODI series against West Indies (beginning September 27) will see a rotated squad due to the simultaneous commitments of the Asian Games in Japan, the selectors are already looking ahead. The selection committee is expected to meet by September 3 to finalize the squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan.
Fitness reports for key players—including Hardik Pandya, Nitish Reddy, and Jasprit Bumrah—are currently being assessed, while mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy is reportedly back to full fitness and in consideration for the national side.
