Jared Kushner, a prominent figure in American diplomacy, recently engaged in crucial discussions in Egypt, where he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. These high-level meetings are part of broader efforts to advance the Trump administration’s peace initiatives in the region. Israeli media outlets have further reported that Kushner, accompanied by Nickolay Mladenov and Tony Blair, is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. The primary objective of these forthcoming discussions is to push forward the proposed peace plan.
However, the path to peace is fraught with complexities, particularly concerning the Israeli stance. Prime Minister Netanyahu has explicitly stated that any implementation of a peace deal is contingent upon the complete disarmament of Hamas. This prerequisite was underscored last week when Netanyahu declared, “Israel rejects the Board of Peace’s 15-point document on Gaza. The IDF will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed.” This firm position, even defying Israel’s closest ally, highlights the profound challenges in bridging the divergent viewpoints of the involved parties.
This rigid stance from Israel has drawn significant international concern. A joint statement issued on Sunday by a coalition of influential nations, including Egypt, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, and Indonesia, warned that Israel’s rejection of the US plan poses a substantial threat to President Trump’s broader efforts for peace in the Middle East. Such unified condemnation from these nations underscores the delicate balance of regional diplomacy and the potential ramifications of unyielding positions.
Despite the ongoing diplomatic maneuvers, the fragile ceasefire that came into effect on October 10 last year technically remains in place. Nevertheless, the reality on the ground reflects a more volatile situation. The Israel Defense Forces have conducted multiple strikes in Gaza since the ceasefire’s inception. Most recently, these operations targeted alleged “terrorists” in the Khan Yunis and Nuseirat areas of Gaza, with Israel accusing Hamas of violating the truce.
