A tragic incident has unfolded in north Wales, resulting in the fatalities of two individuals following a light aircraft crash. The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered in a secluded and rugged area near Trawsfynydd, a location situated close to Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd. Upon the discovery, emergency services confirmed that both occupants of the plane had sadly perished at the scene.
The alarm was first raised shortly after 12:00 BST when North Wales Police received reports that a light aircraft, which had departed from an airfield in England, had failed to arrive at its scheduled destination, Caernarfon Airport. This prompted an immediate and extensive search operation. A collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, both airborne and ground-based, was swiftly launched to locate the missing aircraft. The challenging terrain and remote nature of the search area undoubtedly presented significant hurdles for the teams involved.
Following the discovery of the crash site, a specialized team of investigators from the Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) was promptly deployed. Their crucial role will be to meticulously examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, gathering evidence to determine the exact cause of the crash. Chief Superintendent Owain Llewellyn of North Wales Police acknowledged the immense difficulty of the search operation, describing it as “challenging.” He extended his deepest condolences, stating that “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved in this tragic incident.” Ch Supt Llewellyn further affirmed that his force would provide full support to the AAIB in their ongoing investigation, emphasizing the commitment to “ensure the circumstances leading to this incident are fully understood.” He also expressed his gratitude, commending all the agencies involved for their “professionalism and dedication” during this difficult time. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with aviation and the critical importance of rigorous safety protocols in preventing such devastating breaking news.
