From Size 18 to 12: How One Mum Broke the Cycle of Emotional Eating to Transform Her Life
For many, the path to a healthier lifestyle is paved with obstacles, but for 46-year-old Sophie Scott, the biggest hurdle was the relentless cycle of misery and comfort eating. The administrative assistant from Earsdon found herself trapped in a rut, where unhappiness led to poor dietary choices, which in turn fueled further distress.
Reflecting on her journey, Sophie admits that her weight gain had become a source of profound discomfort. “My clothes were getting tighter, I didn’t feel comfortable in what I was wearing, and I was constantly complaining that I had nothing to wear, even though my wardrobe was full,” she explained. At a size 18, the simple act of buying larger clothing only served to reinforce her unhappiness.
The Pandemic Trap
Sophie’s activity levels plummeted during the Covid-19 pandemic, a period that saw her trade home-cooked meals for the ease of convenience. Relying on frozen pizzas, chicken burgers loaded with high-calorie toppings, and a steady stream of sweet snacks, her health began to decline.
“The more I ate, the more miserable I became, and the more miserable I felt, the more I ate,” she said. “I’d sometimes sneakily buy chocolate on my way home and eat it without really thinking. After a meal, I would always want a pudding—I constantly felt like I needed something else.”
A Turning Point for the Future
The realization that she needed to change came when she looked at her two daughters. As they entered adulthood, Sophie realized she didn’t want them to perceive her current state of inactivity and unhappiness as the “norm.”
“I wanted to set a better example for them and show them that it’s never too late to make a change and prioritise your health and happiness,” she shared.
Determined to succeed despite having previously abandoned such efforts, Sophie returned to Slimming World with a newfound focus. The results have been nothing short of life-changing: she has successfully shed 5st, dropping from 16st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs, and transitioning from a size 18 to a size 12.
A Sustainable New Lifestyle
Today, Sophie’s relationship with food and health is unrecognizable. She has removed alcohol from her life entirely and swapped processed convenience foods for nutrient-dense, home-cooked alternatives. Her daily routine now centers on lean proteins, abundant vegetables, and mindful portion control.
“Looking back now, losing the weight has given me so much more than a smaller number on the scales,” she said. “It’s given me a healthier, happier and more active life.”
Sophie’s story serves as a powerful reminder that while the cycle of emotional eating can feel impossible to break, with the right mindset and a commitment to self-care, a complete transformation is well within reach.
