“Not Sending Legends”: Mohammad Yousuf Slams PCB Over Radical Shake-up Amid England Tour Chaos
Former Pakistan cricket icon Mohammad Yousuf has launched a scathing critique of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following a dramatic overhaul of the Test squad and coaching staff during the ongoing tour of England. The legendary batter characterized the board’s decision-making as a symptom of the deep-rooted instability that has plagued the nation’s cricket administration for decades.
A Controversial Overhaul
The PCB, under the leadership of Mohsin Naqvi, initiated sweeping changes after the national side fell to a 2-0 deficit in the three-Test series. The board’s response to back-to-back defeats—a heavy innings loss at Headingley and a 194-run rout at Lord’s—was to immediately release seven players and two coaching staff members ahead of the final Test.
The list of released players includes Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad. Furthermore, red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were removed, with white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke stepping in to manage the remainder of the tour.
“Familiar Cycle of Internal Chaos”
Yousuf took to social media to voice his frustrations, arguing that the timing and nature of these removals suggest deeper internal dysfunction rather than simple performance-based accountability.
“The recent decision by the authorities to recall players and coaching staff from the ongoing tour does not appear to be only performance-related,” Yousuf wrote in a post on X. “After all, we are not sending legends like Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq, or Saeed Anwar as replacements. Instead, this move reflects the familiar cycle of internal chaos, differences of opinion, and controversies that have long haunted Pakistan cricket.”
Reflecting on the history of the sport in the country, the veteran of 90 Tests noted that this turbulence has been a recurring theme since the team’s historic 1992 World Cup triumph. He warned that such frequent upheavals serve only to erode the team’s progress and shatter the confidence of the fanbase.
A Call for Focus
Yousuf emphasized that the constant boardroom maneuvering and reactive personnel changes are distractions from what actually happens on the field. According to the former star, the only sustainable solution to the national team’s woes is consistent performance.
“The lesson is clear! Only strong performances and consistent positive results can silence the noise,” Yousuf stated. “Pakistan cricket must focus on the field, not the boardroom, if it is to restore credibility and inspire confidence among fans. Success remains the most effective antidote.”
As Pakistan looks to salvage pride in the final Test, Yousuf’s remarks highlight a growing sentiment among former players that until the PCB shifts its focus away from reactive administration and toward long-term stability, the national team will continue to struggle against the world’s elite.
