Cricket Legends Rally for Humane Treatment of Jailed Former PM Imran Khan
In an extraordinary display of international solidarity, a coalition of 22 former international cricket captains has formally appealed to Pakistani authorities to ensure that incarcerated former Prime Minister and cricketing icon Imran Khan receives proper medical care and humane treatment.
The group, which transcends national boundaries, has addressed a letter to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging his government to adhere to court-mandated protocols regarding Khan’s health and access to his family.
A Plea for Basic Well-being
Former India captain Kapil Dev, a legendary figure in the sport, is among the high-profile signatories. Speaking on the matter, Kapil Dev emphasized that the appeal is strictly a humanitarian effort, distinct from the ongoing legal proceedings facing the former leader.
“Law is a law for everybody,” Kapil Dev remarked during an interaction with NDTV. “As a cricket fellow, we can ask Pakistan and request them: give him better treatment. The law will take its time, but you can ensure his basic welfare.”
Kapil Dev argued that given Khan’s status as a former Prime Minister, the conditions of his confinement and the medical facilities provided to him must meet reasonable standards. “We are only concerned about that—we are not concerned about what he has done wrong or right,” he added.
Independent Medical Assessment Sought
The collective of captains is calling for an independent medical assessment, specifically requesting that a medical board—as previously ordered by the Supreme Court of Pakistan—be allowed to evaluate Khan’s health. This board would include Khan’s own personal physicians.
A primary concern for the signatories is the reported deterioration of Khan’s health, including allegations that he has suffered a loss of vision in his right eye. Furthermore, the group has demanded the immediate restoration of weekly family visits, which have been subject to delays and restrictions.
Global Cricket Community Unites
The initiative was spearheaded by former Australian captain Greg Chappell and marks the second time in six months that international cricket legends have intervened to advocate for Khan’s rights.
The list of signatories represents the “who’s who” of cricket history, including:
- India: Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and Dilip Vengsarkar.
- International: Clive Lloyd (West Indies), Alastair Cook (England), and Allan Border (Australia), among others.
The group has maintained that their appeal is entirely non-political, rooted in the deep camaraderie shared by those who have led their nations on the cricket field. By calling for transparency and humane standards, these legends hope to ensure that the former Pakistani leader is afforded the basic dignity and medical attention required by international norms.
