Deshpande and Kotian Spearhead West Zone’s Dominance in Duleep Trophy Clash
The opening day of the latest Duleep Trophy encounter between North Zone and West Zone saw a thrilling seesaw battle, ultimately defined by a ruthless bowling display that left the North Zone batting lineup in disarray.
At the Centre of Excellence, it was the duo of pacer Tushar Deshpande and off-spinner Tanush Kotian who stole the spotlight. The pair proved nearly unplayable for the North Zone batters, sharing eight wickets equally between them to orchestrate a collapse.
North Zone’s Tale of Two Halves
North Zone’s innings began with promise. They appeared to be in a position of authority when they reached 117 for 2, showing solid composure against the West Zone attack. However, the momentum shifted dramatically as the middle order buckled under pressure. The team found themselves reeling at 220 for 9, staring down the barrel of a sub-230 total.
It was only a spirited, late-innings counter-attack from Anshul Kamboj that saved North Zone from further embarrassment. Kamboj played an audacious knock, smashing 60 runs off just 52 deliveries. His whirlwind innings, punctuated by five boundaries and five towering maximums, pushed the final team total to 251. By the end of his spell, Deshpande had claimed 4/57, while Kotian finished with impressive figures of 4/72.
West Zone’s Response
In their pursuit of the target, West Zone faced immediate hurdles as the North Zone bowlers looked to capitalize on their late-innings resurgence. The North Zone attack managed to claw their way back into the contest with two crucial strikes.
Left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq delivered a stunning, turning delivery that clean-bowled opener Prithvi Shaw, silencing the crowd. Soon after, T20 specialist Arshdeep Singh struck, removing Harvik Desai to keep North Zone’s hopes alive.
By the close of play, West Zone found themselves at 31 for 2, setting the stage for a high-stakes second day where the match hangs firmly in the balance. All eyes will now be on the West Zone middle order as they look to build a foundation against a rejuvenated North Zone pace and spin battery.
