Whitchurch Welcomes Back the World’s Biggest Snowflake for Sparkling Festive Encore

Whitchurch Welcomes Back the World’s Biggest Snowflake for Sparkling Festive Encore

A Shropshire village is preparing to shine brighter than ever this winter as the renowned “Higher Heath Lights” display prepares to make its official return. The festive attraction, located three miles south of Whitchurch near postcode SY13 2HD, will welcome visitors once again following a year that saw the project earn prestigious world-record recognition.

Created by local resident Phil Tranter, the display has become a local sensation, drawing crowds to his private garden. The centrepiece of the installation remains the gargantuan, world-record-breaking ornamental snowflake. Measuring 16ft 5in across and intricately fitted with more than 6,500 individual lights, the structure will once again serve as a focal point of the illuminated visitor route.

For the 2026 season, Mr Tranter has significantly expanded the experience, more than doubling the size of the walking route through his property. Guests can expect a sensory-rich journey that combines a sophisticated light show with integrated soundscapes. While familiar, beloved features from previous years will return, the creator has promised that several “hidden” new installations are waiting to be unveiled on opening night.

Other highlights of this year’s display include a towering six-metre illuminated Christmas tree, a giant nutcracker, and a signature light tunnel. Families will also be pleased to see the return of Santa’s Grotto, where children will receive festive treats.

“We have numerous new installations this year that will remain hidden until the official opening,” Mr Tranter said, emphasizing his commitment to the local community. Admission to the display is entirely free, as Mr Tranter describes the light show as his personal gift to the area. While there is no entry fee, voluntary donations are welcomed, with all proceeds going to support a chosen charity.

The spectacle is scheduled to officially switch on at 4:30pm on Sunday, November 22. The launch will be preceded by a festive countdown and a small fireworks display starting at 4pm.

Following the grand opening, the attraction will welcome visitors daily from 4:30pm until 9pm. In a special gesture for the holiday, the lights will remain on throughout the entirety of Christmas Day. The display is set to conclude its run following a final switch-off after Saturday, January 2, 2027.

With the combination of last year’s world-record pedigree and a significantly expanded footprint, Higher Heath Lights is expected to be a major draw for the region this season, offering a bright and heartwarming experience for the entire community.
