Teenage Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Takes Helm for East Zone in Duleep Trophy Semifinal

In a remarkable milestone for his burgeoning cricketing career, 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stepped into the role of captain for East Zone during their high-stakes Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone this Sunday.

The opportunity arose unexpectedly after East Zone’s regular captain, seasoned wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, was forced to withdraw from field duties due to a thumb injury sustained while keeping. With Kumar Kushagra taking over glove-work responsibilities, the vice-captain Sooryavanshi was thrust into the leadership role, marking a rare moment in domestic first-class cricket for a player of his age.

Embracing the Responsibility

Sooryavanshi has quickly become a focal point of the East Zone campaign. While he is primarily recognized for his batting prowess, his utility as an all-rounder has caught the attention of selectors and team management. During the quarter-final clash against North East Zone, he showcased his versatility by chipping in with two crucial wickets, despite a modest outing with the bat.

Reflecting on his newfound bowling responsibilities, Sooryavanshi shared his enthusiasm for the game’s multiple facets. “If you ask any batter, they always enjoy bowling. A batter always enjoys bowling and a bowler always enjoys batting equally,” he remarked in a video released by BCCI Domestic.

The youngster’s confidence was on full display when he recounted how he secured his bowling spell. “The opponent team’s wickets weren’t falling, so I was asked to bowl two or three overs. Ishan Bhaiya felt like he was taking a risk, but he didn’t know that I am a wicket-taker,” he added, highlighting his competitive spirit.

East Zone Dominates Opening Session

Under the overcast conditions, East Zone won the toss and elected to field first against a formidable Central Zone side led by Rajat Patidar. Central Zone saw the return of Saransh Jain to their lineup, fresh off his recent international debut for India in the Colombo Test against Sri Lanka.

East Zone’s bowling unit came out firing, putting immediate pressure on the Central lineup. By the end of the opening session, they had restricted their opponents to 81/3 after 32 overs. Abhijit K. Sarkar was the standout performer early on, claiming the vital wickets of Aman Mokhade and Kunal Chandela. The pressure was compounded by strike bowler Mukesh Kumar, who dismissed captain Rajat Patidar, while the presence of Mohammed Shami ensured that the scoring rate remained under strict control.
